2011 Season Week 13 Clips

TECHNICAL NOTE:  For those not aware, when viewing these videos in the YouTube window, you can adjust the resolution for a sharper view.  Notice in the lower right hand corner of the video player window a setting such as "240p".  Click on that and you can adjust the setting up to 360p, 480p or even 720p in some cases.  This will give you a sharper image.

False start?    This is a strange looking play.  It appears linemen on each side of the ball move prior to the snap.  The viewer can decide.

Personal Foul on a Pass Play   This video  demonstrates the critical importance of knowing what the status of the ball was when a foul occurred in order to ensure the penalty is properly enforced.   A long pass was completed to the B 5 1/2 yard line.  However, team B committed a personal foul ("hands to the face")  in interior line play, before the pass was thrown.  Since this foul is enforced under 3 and 1 princicples, Team A should have had a choice between the result of the play or a 15 yard penalty from the previous spot.  This foul does not qualify for "tack on" enforcement as it would had the foul been roughing the passer.

A "Bonked" Back Judge    It is usually a good idea for the B to have some idea of where a punted ball is coming down.

Block Out of Bounds   A rule change this year made it a foul to go out of bounds to initiate a block.  This video shows an example of that foul.  Since the foul happened during the kick play portion of the down, it qualified for post-scrimmage kick enforcement.  Had it happened during the return of the kick, penalty enforcement would have been under the standard 3 and 1 principle.

Spiking   Players have devised all types of acts which can result in a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct The "spike" is not seen so much any longer, perhaps because it is so widely known as an act that will always draw the flag.  But it still happens.  This is also a good explanation of the call and the enforcement.

High Hits and Technology    This is a short compilation of some high hits and a report on some new technology being used to track the effects of such hits on players.

"Divine Intervention"   A good example of why only one official should signal which team has possession after a scramble for a loose ball.

Holding or Personal Foul ?   Many times a single act can qualify as a foul under multiple rule sections.  The act classified as a hold in this play also appears to be a personal foul under 9-1-2-a.
